Five area teams play for softball bids

Southeast Valley is one of five area softball teams playing for state tournament berths on Monday.

The Jaguars (23-14 overall) head to No. 7 Treynor (29-3) in a Class 3A, Region 7 championship matchup. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Head coach Heather Lundberg’s squad advanced with an 8-3 win over Carroll and a 4-3 victory over Carroll Kuemper.

Sophomore Emily Jaeschke is batting .344 with 15 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 39 runs scored. Senior Morgan Castenson is hitting .385 with 29 RBI and 24 runs. Senior Kasey Lundberg (.339, 21 RBI, 30 R) is another offensive leader for the Jaguars.

Junior Mackenzie Crampton (8-7, 2.10 ERA) and Castenson (10-6, 2.14) are the top two SV pitchers.

Under the direction of Fort Dodge Senior High graduate Courtney (Vaughn) Darrow, fourth-rated Newell-Fonda (36-5) is back in the regional finals. The Mustangs take on Ridge View (23-10) at home for a Class 1A, Region 2 championship.

Sophomore Bailey Sievers is batting .504 with 29 RBI, 28 stolen bases and 45 runs scored for N-F. Sophomore Maggie Walker (.482, 54 RBI, 42 runs, 30 SB), sophomore Ella Larsen (.410, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 56 runs) and senior Olivia Larsen (.418, 35 RBI, 63 runs, 56 stolen bases) are the other Mustang catalysts at the plate. Junior Megan Morenz (.423, 45 RBI, 42 runs) and senior Emma Stewart (.423, 29 RBI, 51 runs, 33 SB) are also clear of the .400 mark.

Ella Larsen is 18-2 with a 1.82 ERA, while Sievers is 13-2.

Algona (16-10), which upset third-ranked Humboldt in the regional semifinals, now heads to Spirit Lake to take on the 22-6 Indians in a 3A, Region 2 championship.

Junior Kameryn Etherington is batting .395 with six home runs and 25 RBI, while sporting a 12-8 pitching record with a 1.48 earned run average. Etherington tossed a complete game in the Bulldogs’ 4-2 victory over the Wildcats.

Senior Nicole Smidt, who had three hits against Humboldt, carries a .366 average.

Ninth-ranked Bishop Garrigan (28-6) squares off with No. 6 AGWSR (20-6) in a Class 1A, Region 8 showdown.

Twin sisters Madison and Mackenzie Meister lead the Golden Bears. Mackenzie is batting .509; Madison is hitting .504. They are both juniors.

Mackenzie Meister has 5 home runs, 45 RBI, 21 stolen bases and 54 runs scored.

Junior Amanda Miller is 23-5 with a 2.67 ERA, and sports a .392 batting average with 43 RBI.

East Sac County (13-17) has knocked off Pocahontas Area, Emmetsburg and South Central Calhoun to reach the 2A, Region 5 finals. Now the Raiders head to No. 8 Central Springs (27-7) for a spot at state.

Eighth-grader Maci Gustavson leads the ESC offense with a .456 batting average. Sophomore Madi Quirk is hitting .393 with a team-best 19 RBI.

Senior Kara Wilkins will get the nod in the pitcher’s circle.
