Scott throws one-hitter for Gaels

HAMPTON — The St. Edmond baseball team put together the kind of complete game Mike Szalat has been hoping for here Friday night.

Peyton Scott tossed a five-inning one-hitter, as the Gaels topped Hampton-Dumont, 11-0.

Scott struck out nine and worked around four walks on the night.

Jack McEvoy reached base all four times, hitting a home, two doubles, a single and drawing a walk. Noah Carlson and Nick Bennett each had two hits, and Jackson Kochendorfer a double.

“That’s the kind of team I see in practice,” Szalat said. “It was so good to see them put it together on the field.

“We’ve had good pitching all season, and now it seems like our bats are coming alive.”

The Gaels scored in every inning, plating two runs in the first, one each in the second and third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth.

“We had eight hits out of our lineup and the ninth guy laid down a perfect sac bunt,” Szalat said. “We’ve really been working on hitting, focusing on line drives, and we are starting to see that hard work come to fruition.”

For McEvoy, the homer was the first of his career.

St. Edmond returns to action Monday night when they host Webster City at Rogers Park.

In the junior varsity contest, the Gaels lost, 6-5. Grant Heldorfer and Tyler McDowell each had a hit and drove in a run.
