Power surge

Tristin Doster saw just five pitches Tuesday night, and she made the most of each look.

Doster launched a pair of solo home runs to help lead third-ranked (Class 5A) Fort Dodge to a 5-3 victory over No. 1 (4A) Carlisle here at Rogers Park.

The Dodger sophomore belted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in center in the second and launched a 1-1 pitch to right in the fifth for her third and fourth homers of the season.

In her only other at-bat of the night, Doster was intentionally walked.

“That’s what we have been working for over the years with Tristin,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “We’ve put in so many miles and so many hours getting her to this point. She’s really putting it all together this season on the field.

“She’s really our captain out there and the leader of our team despite being just a 10th-grader.”

Jalen Adams picked up her 14th victory of the season, striking out five without walking a batter inside the circle as the Dodgers (19-5 overall) rebounded from a sweep Monday at top-ranked (5A) Waukee.

“This is a brutal, brutal week for us,” Adams said. “It was so great to see the girls bounce right back after the Waukee losses and beat a very, very good team in Carlisle. This is a traditional program that does it right and this was a big win for us.”

Haley Wills had a pair of hits and scored a run, with Sophia Klinger and Malia Lowrey each crossing home. Tory Bennett, Aubrey Davis, Loghen Schnetzer and Maia Davis all had a hit each.

Davis, a freshman, made a run-saving catch in the second to keep Carlisle (23-3) off the board. With a runner on second, Davis snagged a hard-hit bat by Kennady Prenosil for the third out.

In the bottom of the second, Davis was part of a typical FDSH moment on the bases, as the speed of the Dodgers caused fits for the Wildcats.

“Maia was sensational,” Adams said. “We call her ‘Kitty Girl’ because she is always out there causing problems and running around with her quickness.”

Carlisle, which had won five in a row and 13 of its last 14 entering the night, made it interesting with three runs in the sixth. The Wildcats had two more in scoring position when Adams induced a grounder for the third out.

“I just have so much respect for what Carlisle does,” Adams said. “They are always going to fight until the very end and they forced us to get back into the game there late.”

Molly Hoekstra suffered her first loss of the season in 20 games, allowing four earned runs in five innings. The Carlisle junior is receiving interest from colleges for her basketball skills.

The Wildcats are coached by Jim Flaws, a native of Webster City. Flaws surpassed the 1,100 win mark earlier this season.

Fort Dodge returns to action Wednesday night with a doubleheader at Marshalltown. First-pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Prior to the start of the game, Adams and the Dodger softball program honored Jim Winter for his years of service at Rogers Park with the Fort Dodge Parks and Recreation Department. Winter is retiring at the end of this week.
