Gaels power past Cowgirls

Nick Clark saw his St. Edmond softball team having fun on the diamond here Thursday night at Rogers Park.

All nine batters reached base for the Gaels, who picked up a 10-0 victory in five innings over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

Gracie Harvey led the charge out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup, belting her second two-RBI triple of the week before adding another RBI in the fifth. The freshman finished 2-for-2 with a walk on the night.

Rylee Kinney, Jacque Oberg and Kacey Kruthoff all drove in two runs each, with Erin Flattery and Oberg recording two hits each.

“It all started right off the bat with Erin getting on and coming around to score,” Clark said. “We got that first run and I thought it really set the tone. We hit the ball hard all night and just seeing Erin get going out of the gates was the key.

“And Gracie is really settling into that spot in the order. She’s a deadly nine-hole hitter.”

The Gaels (7-8 overall, 4-3 in North Central Conference) plated a run in the first, three in the second, two in the third and finished it off with four in the fifth. Flattery and Oberg combined to reach base eight times, Kruthoff was on three times, and Kinney, Devyn Scott and Ella Vratny reached twice.

“We had good at-bats, sitting back and waiting on pitches,” Clark said. “We made solid contact and had good energy. It was a lot of fun to watch them have fun.

“Everybody got involved and I thought this was a step in the right direction.”

Kendall Lienemann and Alaina Friesleben had the lone hits for the Cowgirls (2-9, 1-6).

St. Edmond is off until Monday night when they head to No. 2 (Class 3A) Humboldt to face the Wildcats. First-pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
