Dodgers top ranked squads

GRIMES — The third-ranked (Class 5A) Fort Dodge softball team came away with a sweep over perennial state tournament qualifiers Dallas Center-Grimes and Iowa City Regina here Friday.

The Dodgers used a seventh inning run by Tory Bennett to claim a 5-4 victory vs. No. 7 (4A) Dallas Center-Grimes, following that up with a 9-0 win vs. No. 8 (2A) Regina.

Daphne Alstott hit a home run in the third as part of a three-run inning for FDSH (23-5 overall), finishing the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Bennett and Tristin Doster each had three hits, with Doster driving in a run and scoring once. Bennett had a run and a stolen base to go along with a double.

“When Tory is getting on base, that is when things start to happen,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “She was causing problems all day and just on fire.

“And Tristin is crushing the ball to all parts of the field. She is calm and focused, and is leading us at the plate.”

Aubrey Davis drove in a run and scored, as Jalen Adams added two hits to go along with six strikeouts inside the circle.

Doster and Loghen Schnetzer both went deep vs. the Regals, as Doster finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and two doubles. Schnetzer drove in two, as did Bennett, with Adams collecting two hits.

Alstott plated two runs, scored and had a stolen base. Davis also drove in another run.

Schnetzer now has eight homers on the season and Doster has five. Adams has reached base in all 28 games this year.

Haley Wills earned the win, striking out four over six innings with just five hits allowed. Katelyn Werning pitched a perfect seventh, striking out one.

“Haley pitched a great game,” Adams said. “She kept Regina off balance. I thought everybody did their job against two very good teams as we look to finish off a really long week.”

The Dodgers, who have won five in a row and 11 of their last 13, head to Bettendorf on Saturday to face No. 2 (3A) Louisa-Muscatine and No. 10 (5A) Pleasant Valley. Both are defending state champions.
