Dodgers serve notice

WEST DES MOINES — Despite having a week between games, the third-ranked (Class 5A) Fort Dodge softball team showed no signs of rust, scoring victories over No. 10 Johnston and second-rated Cedar Rapids Kennedy here Saturday at the West Des Moines Valley Shootout.

The Dodgers topped the Dragons, 6-1, and defeated Kennedy, 2-0.

“You walk up to the Valley Shootout with so many great teams and you don’t know how you are going to come out of it,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “And here we were, not having played for a week, and these girls just come out and played great.”

In the opener, Chloe Wertz drove in three runs, Tory Bennett scored three times and had two hits, with Daphne Alstott, Haley Wills and Sophia Klinger each recording two hits. Wills and Loghen Schnetzer each had a double.

Jalen Adams allowed just four hits, striking out 10.

“I am so proud of Jalen,” Adams said. “To do what she did against two great teams like that is just incredible.”

Adams followed that up with a two-hitter vs. Kennedy, striking out 10 and not walking a batter. Schnetzer connected on a solo home run with Bennett adding two doubles, including one that drove in Tristin Doster.

“Loghen crushed a pitch off an all-state pitcher,” Adams said. “Tory had just a phenomenal day at the plate and looked so confident out there. Daphne made an incredible catch.

“Sophia was money out of the No. 9 spot. These girls, even if one of them struggled, somebody else was there to get the job done.”

The Dodgers recorded seven hits off Kennedy’s Jayme Scheck, who went 16-3 last year and allowed just 53 hits in over 102 innings pitched.

Fort Dodge returns home for four games this week beginning Monday when they host No. 5 Waukee at Rogers Park. The Dodgers also entertain North Polk on Wednesday and second-ranked (3A) Humboldt Friday.
