Garrigan, Newell-Fonda in hunt at 1A state golf

NEWTON — The Bishop Garrigan boys golf team is sitting in third place after the opening day of the Class 1A state tournament at the Westwood Golf Course.

The Golden Bears shot a 344. Harris-Lake Park (322) is the current leader and Grundy Center (325) is second place. Newell-Fonda (356) is in the fifth position.

Edgewood-Colesburg’s Ethan Streicher shot a one over-par 72 and is the clubhouse leader. Harris-Lake Park’s Lucas Gunderson (74) is second and Westwood Sloan’s Sam Miller (75) is third.

Newell-Fonda sophomore Hogan Henrich and Bishop Garrigan junior Andrew Arndorfer are tied for fourth with 77s.

“We had a pretty good day all things considered,” N-F head coach Nathan Baron said. “The course played extremely hard and it was our first time seeing it. I was hoping we would shoot a little lower team score than we did, but we still have a lot to play for.”

Henrich birdied 15 and 16 and had nine pars.

Damon Bartek had a 90 with six pars, followed by Bryce Coppock (92) and Izak Baron (97).

“Hogan once again had a great round and has put himself in position for a high individual finish,” Baron said. “One of our goals this week was to come down here and win some hardware. If we play well (Friday) we certainly have a chance to do that.”

Arndorfer had one birdie on the day and the Golden Bears had three overall. Arndorfer had 11 pars. He is a three-time state qualifier, placing third here last season.

“The greens were rolling really good and heading into (Friday) I think I could improve by at least three strokes because I hit zero greens on the back nine,” Arndorfer said. “I started off with a birdie, but went double-bogey, bogey after that.”

Kyle Schaaf shot an 85. Grayson Rowlet checked in with an 89 and Adyn Rowlet had a 93.

“We golfed our best round of the year, but all our guys know they left some strokes out there,” BG head coach Jared Montag said. “We are hoping to golf our best (Friday) and that is all I can ask for.”
