Gaels lose ranked tilt vs. NF

NEWELL — In an early-season battle of ranked Class 1A team, No. 5 Newell-Fonda scored a 10-1 victory over 11th-ranked St. Edmond here Monday night.

Ella Larsen recorded seven strikeouts and Ellie Lago hit a two-run homer for the Mustangs, who collected 14 hits on the night.

“We looked timid,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “We have to do a better job of putting the ball in play. We didn’t look very confident at the plate and not real comfortable out there.

“But that will come with more practices and more games.”

After Ella Vratny stole home for the first run of the game for the Gaels, Newell-Fonda answered with Lago’s homer in the second and four more runs in the third.

Vratny struck out seven batters and stole two bases. Erin Flattery had two hits and Macey Mason another.

St. Edmond returns to action Thursday at Pocahontas Area.
