DES MOINES — After surprising even himself by winning the Class 3A 3200-meter run at state, Trey Engen finished off the distance-double here Saturday.

Engen, an Algona senior, became the first runner in school history to win two individual state titles in the same meet, clocking a time of 4:24.83 to win the 1600 by nearly four seconds inside Drake Stadium.

“I just really want to thank my family, my coaches and my teammates for helping me develop my God given ability to run,” Engen said. “Most importantly, I’m grateful for the fact that I can eat as much ice cream and pizza for the next week and a half.”

Engen’s gold medal performances helped the Bulldogs place fourth overall with 39 points as Sammonte Bawden claimed a pair of thirds and Wyatt Wegener added an eighth.

Bawden, a junior, was third in both the 100 in 11.49 and the 200 in 22.54. Those were improvements on his fourth and seventh place finishes from last year.

“I’m crazy excited for next year,” Bawden said. “I’m gonna train hard this year with Wyatt so we can come back next year and show Iowa what we got.”

Wegener, also a junior, finished the 100 in a time of 11.91. The two also ran on Algona’s sprint medley that finished 10th in 1:35.76 with Patrick David and Skyler Groen.

“I’m pretty happy on how we performed as a team,” Wegener said. “I felt that it helped me improve a lot. Sammonte and I already talked about how we got to work to get where we want to be.”
