ALGONA — Bishop Garrigan’s Angelo Winkel will get his chance to impress college coaches coming up in June.

The Golden Bear junior-to-be was one of 40 Iowa underclassmen selected to compete in a special regional event that will bring together players from Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Winkel will head to Liberty High School in Kansas City June 22-23 for individual workouts, practices and 5-on-5 games.

“It means a lot being recognized and getting respect from people in Iowa,” Winkel said. “There will be tons of great competition there.

“It’s the best in Iowa and it’s a huge honor.”

Winkel, who stands 6-foot-9, averaged 16.6 points per game on 59 percent shooting from the floor. He also averaged 9.5 rebounds, with 62 blocks, 44 assists and 20 steals.

The 40 players will be cut into five teams to compete in front of NCAA Div. I, II and III men’s basketball coaches during the allowed time to observe recruits.

Some notables that were selected to join Winkel include West Des Moines Valley’s Will Berg, Norwalk’s Bowen Born, Even Brauns of Iowa City West, Tamin Lipsey from Ames, Central City’s Nick Reid, Karson Sharar of Iowa Falls-Alden and Montezuma’s Trey Shearer, who played knocked Bishop Garrigan out of the Class 1A state tournament this past winter.

“It means a lot knowing that I’m up there with the best and getting respect from people,” Winkel said. “I’m planning on playing AAU basketball this summer and continuing to work on my game.”
