Titan boys earn title in Manson

MANSON — The South Central Calhoun boys edged Pocahontas Area at the finish line for the Manson Northwest Webster Cougar Relays title on Tuesday.

The Titans finished with 148 points — six clear of the Indians (142). St. Edmond (75) clipped Southeast Valley (72) for fourth place.

Spencer Moon was a double winner for SCC, taking both the 800- and 1600-meter runs in 2:00.65 and 4:49.28, respectively. Chase McAlister also prevailed in the 400-meter dash in 51.38 for the Titans, as did Josh Van Hulzen in the 110-meter hurdles (15.35) and Cole Corey in the high jump (6-2).

The Titans’ shuttle hurdle relay (1:02.32), sprint medley relay (1:36.69) and distance medley relay (3:48.51) teams were also victorious.

For Pocahontas Area, Christian Davidson won the 100-meter dash (11.67) and teammate Dane Johnson grabbed gold in the shot put (44-2). Cade Hendrickson (19-8) also took the long jump crown.

The PAC 4×800-meter relay (8:46.33) was first as well.

The Gaels took three individual races. Kase Baker won the 200-meter dash (23.11), and both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays prevailed. Baker, Charlie Shelly, Sean Flattery and Sean Newell ran a 45.03 in the 4×1; Newell, Flattery, Shelly and Andrew Gibb clocked a 3:34.35 in the 4×4.

“Kase had a really solid night,” SEHS head coach Donn Larson said. “His time in the 200 puts him inside the Top-10 in the state, which is great considering he’s still not 100 percent health-wise.

“The 4×1 and 4×4 both did well, and our sprint medley (relay) had a season-best time (1:36.92; second to only the Titans). It was a beautiful night to run.”

Southeast Valley captured the 4×200-meter relay in 1:34.47.

Josh Henkenius of South Central Calhoun was a runner-up in both the 100 (11.72) and 200 (23.75). McAlister took second in the 800 (2:04.18). The Titans’ 4×800-meter relay was second (9:15.09) as well.

For PAC, Cooper Christians (16.11 in the 110 hurdles and 6-2 in the high jump) and Nathan Hanson (1:00.43 in the 400 hurdles) were silver medalists, along with the shuttle hurdle relay (1:05.76) and 4×400-meter relay (3:35.35).

Shelly (52.20 in the 400), the distance medley (3:54.21) and the 4×200 (1:35.00) were all second for St. Edmond.

Other area runner-ups were Mason Ackerson of Southeast Valley (129-8 in the discus), Dallas Hammitt of Eagle Grove (42-2 in the shot put), and Coledon Bethel of Southeast Valley (10:47.61 in the 3200), and the Jaguars’ 4×100 quartet (45.56).

The Gaels return to Manson on Thursday and are at Hampton-Dumont Friday, before the 4×100-meter relay heads to the Drake Relays to compete on Saturday.
