Iowa Central routs Spartans twice

Just over a week ago, the ninth-ranked Iowa Central softball team left Creston disappointed with a doubleheader split vs. Southwestern.

There was no such disappointment here Sunday, as the Tritons claimed 11-1 and 17-2 victories over the Spartans at Rogers Park.

Payton Andersen and Gabi Bingham each collected six hits on the day for Iowa Central (26-9 overall, 7-5 in ICCAC), with Andersen driving in eight runs and Bingham scoring three times.

Former Fort Dodge Senior High all-stater Bre Tjebben blasted a pair of two-run homers in back-to-back innings of the second game, finishing with five RBI, four runs and three hits.

Sophie Cave was 5-for-7 with three doubles and scored four runs in the two games, including a 3-for-3 performance in the opener.

Parker Mathews and Jenna Peschel each scored four times, with Peschel adding two doubles and two RBI, Cheyenne Andersen had a pair of RBI and Alexis Morrison blasted a three-run homer.

“We went back to basics with our hitting,” ICCC head coach Rick Sandquist said. “We hit balls the other way and hit them hard. The girls listened and the extra work paid off.

“We didn’t have everybody clicking 1-through-9, but we still put up a lot of runs and that’s what we need to be able to do as we approach tournament time.”

On the day, the Tritons racked up 28 runs on 29 hits with 10 doubles and four homers.

That was more than enough support for pitchers Alex Boyce and Bre Small, who each earned wins inside the circle. Boyce struck out four over four innings and Small fanned two in three.

Iowa Central posted back-to-back seven-run frames in the nightcap, with Tjebben and Morrison hitting their homers during that time. Tjebben now has 10 on the season and Morrison four.

“Bre (Tjebben) came up in some big spots and delivered,” Sandquist said. “Sophia, Payton, Gabi all had big games.

“We’ve had some time off here with the weather, so it was great to challenge them and see them take advantage of the situations presented to them.”

Back on April 4, the Tritons dropped an 8-6 decision in 10 innings to Southwestern (6-25, 2-12) as Kelsey Tibbs went the distance for the Spartans. She was able to work around 10 hits allowed to earn the win.

This time, Iowa Central jumped on her early, plating three runs in the first and adding five more in the third sparked by five doubles in the inning. Tibbs also surrendered Tjebben’s second homer after coming on in relief.

“We challenged the girls,” Sandquist said. “(Tibbs) gave us troubles when we faced her before, but we were able to take advantage of some big situations and score runs.”

The Tritons head to Estherville Monday for a doubleheader with Iowa Lakes beginning at 2:30 p.m.
