catching fire

The Iowa Central women sent their sophomores out on a winning note here Wednesday night, besting Southeastern inside Hodges Fieldhouse, 66-50.

For five Tritons, this marked the final home game, as they finished the year 10-5 here and will carry a four-game win streak into the regular season finale on Saturday.

Brittany West, one of those sophomores, scored a game-high 27 points, with Shariah Smith adding 15. Kira Ward had eight points and Avery Terwilliger chipped in three points, six assists and five rebounds.

“I told them after that when you win your last home game, that’s something you’ll always remember,” ICCC head coach Kelly Kruger said. “They did it the right way and this was nice for them. Now, we’ve got unfinished business to take care of.”

Iowa Central (16-12 overall, 7-8 in ICCAC) battled back from a tough start to the second quarter, gaining control with a 9-0 run highlighted by a Smith 3-pointer. The Fort Dodge Senior High graduate sank three triples and also had five assists, four steals and four rebounds.

West added six rebounds with Ward picking up five. Jessica Jackson had five points and Kryssie Okinaka four points and four assists.

“We did some nice things at times, especially on offense,” Kruger said. “We had a couple good spurts there, but just inconsistent at other stages. I also thought we defended really well, we just couldn’t keep them off the glass.”

The Blackhawks (17-12, 7-8) had their two-game win streak snapped despite holding a 34-30 edge in rebounds. That included 15 offensive boards, with Shaniya Caldwell picking up 15 overall.

Southeastern struggled from the field, shooting just 29 percent for the game and 18 percent from deep. Benedetta Morpurgo and Destiny Trujillo each scored 10.

Iowa Central, meanwhile, finished 50 percent from the field and hit eight 3-pointers. West had four of those, as they also collected 19 assists and had eight steals.

The Tritons travel to Boone to face Des Moines Area on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Region XI Tournament set to start on Monday.
