No. 1 Mustang girls cruise

The top-ranked (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda girls are as talented as any team in the state.

On Tuesday night, the Mustangs showed just how deep that goes, scoring an 83-25 victory over St. Edmond here.

Emma Stewart knocked down seven 3-pointers for a game-high 21 points, Bailey Sievers was 7-for-7 from the field for 15 and Megan Morenz added 14 for Newell-Fonda (11-0 overall).

This marked the third time on the year the Mustangs have scored over 80 points, as they just over 66. Maggie Walker chipped in with 10, while Olivia and Ella Larsen combined for 11 points, six rebounds and five steals.

“No matter who we are playing, these girls always come ready to go,” N-F head coach Dick Jungers said. “They are focused in every practice and take that to the court.

“I was very pleased at how our girls moved the ball on offense and found the hot hands.”

Early on that was Stewart, as the senior drained three triples in the first quarter and had five in the opening half. Newell-Fonda led 45-17 at the break after making 19 field goals.

“That is just a very good, very deep team,” SEHS head coach Steve Neuberger said. “They start five quality players and bring three more very good ones in off the bench.

“I thought we had trouble handling their pressure, which is so hard to duplicate in practice. We had some success in the second half, but we were just in too big of a hole.”

Erin Flattery led the Gaels (2-8) with 12 points and four rebounds, with Jacque Oberg adding five, three boards and a pair of steals.

Newell-Fonda is now 57-5 since 2016-17, including an unbeaten regular season and state runner-up finish a year ago. They travel to Estherville-LC Thursday night.

Next action for St. Edmond will also be on Thursday when they head to Manson Northwest Webster.
