Triton women pass Science test

Brittany West and Shariah Smith led a second half rally that helped the Iowa Central women post a 63-62 victory over North Dakota Science here Friday night.

The Tritons overcame a seven-point deficit after halftime, as West and Smith combined for 19 of their 29 points during that time.

Iowa Central (7-2 overall) stretched its win streak to six and improved to 5-0 inside Hodges Fieldhouse. The game was part of the Great Western Shootout, but will be the lone time the Tritons play over the two-day event due to weather.

Northeast, which lost to NIACC earlier in the day, elected to leave because of the threat of severe weather in the area.

“It’s upsetting because (both the men’s and women’s) coaching staffs, school and Great Western really put a lot into this event,” ICCC head coach Kelly Kruger said. “Our girls were excited about playing in front of a home crowd two straight nights, but I’m glad we were able to pull this one out.”

West, a sophomore, reached double figures for the fourth time this year. She also had three assists, three rebounds and three steals. Smith, a transfer and Fort Dodge Senior High graduate, hit three 3-pointers and also dished out three assists with three steals and four boards.

Avery Terwilliger added 11 points, five assists and five rebounds, with Tierra Itula chipping in 10 points and six boards.

“Britt stepped up and hit some big shots, as did Shariah,” Kruger said. “It wasn’t a really well-played game by either team, but we both played hard and competed.”

Down by four entering the final quarter, the Tritons outscored Northeast, 22-17, as Itula had seven points and Smith six. Iowa Central also benefited from 10 second-chance points in the win.

For the Wildcats, Jolisa Ross scored 12 points and Jazmine Glenn added 11.

The Tritons return to action on Wednesday when they open ICCAC play with second-ranked Kirkwood at home. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
