Dodger girls fall at the buzzer, 40-39

DES MOINES — Daja Bates nailed a bucket as time expired here Tuesday night, giving Des Moines Hoover a 40-39 victory over the Fort Dodge girls.

The Huskies were led by Lorelle Dean’s 15 points, with Bates adding seven. Dean entered the night averaging just five points per game.

For the Dodgers (0-7 overall), Jebreauna Clark had 11 points and Aleah Pommer contributed seven.

“We saw some improvements, but we just had too many fouls,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “Hoover was 15-for-23 at the free throw line and that was the difference.”

Fort Dodge led 20-18 at the half and held a one-point advantage heading to the fourth and final quarter.

The Dodgers attempted just 10 free throws, making six, and had 31 fouls called on them.

Freshman Jalen Adams chipped in with six points, and sophomore Cheyenne Miller-Hameed added five. Miller-Hameed hit a three-point basket with less than a minute left to put FDSH up 39-36, but the Huskies scored the final four points to prevail.

“We mixed things up a bit on defense and had some good moments,” Messerly said. “Clark had a nice floor game and really did a good job on the offensive end.”

Hoover surpassed 40 points for just the second time this year, with the first coming in a 59-45 victory over Marshalltown.

The Dodgers travel to the Roundhouse to face the Bobcats Friday night.
