Algona edges Gael boys in OT

SE’s Gibb reaches 1,000 career points, but Bulldogs win

ALGONA — After falling in a 10-point halftime hole, the St. Edmond boys rallied here Tuesday night, forcing overtime before falling to Algona, 68-62.

Wyatt Wegener scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs, with Spencer Nelson and Jason Cecil each chipping in 13.

For the Gaels (2-3 overall, 1-2 in the North Central Conference), Andrew Gibb scored 19, putting him over the 1,000 mark for his career.

Jackson Kochendorfer added 18 with six rebounds and five assists, and Jed Tracy had eight points and six assists.

Tracy also sank a game-tying 3-pointer to force overtime.

“Algona is a nice, physical team with several good shooters,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “(Assistant coach) Nick (Clark) and I talked after the game about the positives we can take from the second half.”

Sean Newell had seven points, Drew Schaeffer six and Jerris Duncan four for the Gaels, with Mitchell Rasmussen grabbing five rebounds.

Gibb now has 1,012 career points, placing him seventh on the school’s all-time list. Clark leads with 1,437 in his four-year career.

Collin Bleich had 11 points for the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-1).

Next action for St. Edmond will be Friday when they travel to No. 5 (Class 3A) Clear Lake, while Algona heads to Forest City on Thursday before hosting Iowa Falls-Alden here on Friday.
