Dodgers come up short

After struggling to score in the first two games of the year, the Fort Dodge girls broke out on the offensive end here Tuesday night.

However, Des Moines Lincoln — who also struggled last week — found its rhythm, as the Railsplitters picked up a 71-65 victory inside the Dodger gym.

Sophomores Cheyenne Miller-Hameed and Tristin Doster each had double-doubles for FDSH (0-3 overall), as four players scored in double figures.

Miller-Hameed had a career-high 20 points, adding 11 rebounds, with Doster posting 10 points and grabbing 11 boards. Tory Bennett and Aleah Pommer, both ninth-graders, each added 10 points, with classmate Jalen Adams scoring seven.

“It was good to see our offense get going, but we had too many mental mistakes on the defensive end,” Fort Dodge head coach Scott Messerly said. “We were really aggressive taking the ball to the basket, but that left us open to easy baskets by Lincoln on the other end.”

For Lincoln (1-2), Kaylee Weaver had 22 points, Bella Sanders and Trinity Cheatom scored 16 each, and Erika Canada added 13. Weaver and Sanders did their damage in the fourth with 14 points as the Rails held off a late rally.

“We had a good plan going in to slow them down, but foul trouble forced us to change things up,” Messerly said. “The girls gave it their all and really fought hard until the end, so I’m proud of the effort. We’ve just got to keep getting better.”

Miller-Hameed and Pommer both posted six points in the final eight minutes, but turnovers and missed free throws kept the Dodgers from delivering Messerly his first win. Fort Dodge had 32 turnovers on the night and missed 14 shots from the line.

“That’s a lot of missed opportunities for us in a close game like this,” Messerly said. “We had our chances, we just couldn’t get over the hump.”

Next action for the Dodgers will be Friday when they host Ankeny at 6:15 p.m.
