Area players earn all-district softball honors

Thirteen area softball players were recognized by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association as all-district players recently.

Fort Dodge’s Bre Tjebben and Daphne Alstott were honored in Class 5A, with St. Edmond’s Jocy Timmerman and Erin Flattery earning 1A recognition.

Webster City’s Haley Flaws; Humboldt’s Ellie Jacobson, Carlie Thompson and Mady Lange; Algona’s Emma Hjelle; Emmetsburg’s Mikayla Frerichs and Annie Brennan; and Newell-Fonda’s Ella Larsen and Olivia Larsen were all selected in their respective classes.

Tjebben, a senior, helped lead the Dodgers to the state tournament after hitting .438 with 50 RBI, 13 extra-base hits and 10 walks to just four strikeouts. The Iowa Central recruit was also 9-1 inside the circle for FDSH head coach Andi Adams, who earned 5A West Coach of the Year status.

Alstott, a junior, led the Dodgers in batting, hitting .476 with an on-base percentage of .516. She had 20 steals, drove in 35 runs and scored 50 times.

Timmerman, a 10th-grader, hit a team-high .454 with 24 RBI and 10 doubles for St. Edmond, which advanced to a second consecutive regional final. She also had eight steals and struck out just twice all season.

Flattery batted .388 with a .561 slugging that included 13 RBI, 17 steals and 12 extra-base hits. She also scored 31 times to lead the Gaels.

Jacobson, a sophomore, was 28-2 with 235 strikeouts and a 0.94 earned run average for the Wildcats and head coach Doug VanPelt, who earned 3A Central Coach of the Year honors.

Thompson hit .457 with 23 steals, 25 RBI, 14 extra-base hits and 10 walks to seven strikeouts, while Lange hit three homers, drove in 32 and had 14 steals.

Flaws, who will run at Grand View University next year, hit .463 for the Lynx with 38 steals and 38 runs. Hjelle had 12 doubles, drove in 12, drew 19 walks to just nine strikeouts and hit .511 with a .670 slugging and a .598 on-base.

Frerichs was 21-7 inside the circle, striking out 247 batters, with Brennan hitting .423 and driving in 24 for Emmetsburg. Olivia Larsen batted .438 with 52 steals and 24 RBI, while Ella Larsen had 13 wins, struck out 89 and drove in 48 for the Mustangs, who qualified for state.
