DEFENDING THEIR TURF

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt girls track team claimed their own title here on Monday evening, holding off North Central Conference rival Algona.

The Wildcats scored 147 points, 15 ahead of the Bulldogs. Southeast Valley was third followed by Webster City, Estherville-LC, Pocahontas Area, Hampton-Dumont and St. Edmond.

Bryce Gidel was a double winner, as she swept the 3000 and 1500 titles for Humboldt. Teammate Lauren Erickson took the 800. The Wildcats also claimed the 4×400, and received runner-up relay finishes out of the sprint medley, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relay.

Second-place finishers from Humboldt were Mady Lange in the 400 and Rachel Darling in discus.

Kiersten Fisher, a freshman for Southeast Valley, won four individual events. Fisher, who qualified for the Drake Relays in the high jump, won that by clearing 5-4.

Fisher was also the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles champion, with teammate Kanyon Pepples and the 4×200 placing second.

St. Edmond’s Erin Flattery won the long jump and was part of the victorious distance medley relay with Josephine Perry, Aubrey Bemrich and Abby Landwehr.

Flattery was third in the 200 and Landwehr third in the 3000.

For Algona, they won the 4×200, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relays, with runner-up performances out of the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, Kelsey Connick in the 800, Ashlin Young in the 1500, Abbey Holmes in the 100 hurdles and Sydney Hoover in the long jump.

Cassidy Nerland, who will throw at Drake in both the shot put and discus, won those two events for Webster City, with the Lynx also claiming the 4×100 relay. Haley Flaws was runner-up in the 100 and 200, and Alexis Nichols second in the high jump.

Pocahontas Area’s Jill Vonnahme finished second in the 3000 and the Indians had a silver in the 4×800 relay.
