Emery moves up to silver

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — The Iowa Central swim teams had a strong finish to the NJCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.

The men and women had a second- and third-place individual showing, respectively, while the women were third in the final team standings.

“Honestly, I did not think we could do that (place third) with eight girls,” said ICCC head coach Joe Plane. “No matter what event it was, they were ready to go. They had a fantastic last day.”

Fort Dodge Senior High graduate and Triton freshman Mitchell Emery, who had two third-place finishies heading into the final day, added a silver to his resume. Emery was second in the 50 butterfly (22.55). He sway a 22.57 in the prelims.

“He (Emery) defintely had a greet meet,” Plane said. “His second place was the highest place for an individual at Iowa Central ever.”

The quartet of Emery, Karter Shimon, Joshua Sunberg and Lasse Jorgensen were third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.91).

“He led off the 400 relay with a life time best,” Plane said. “

Jorgensen was fifth (46.66) in the 100 freestyle, moving up two spots from the prelims where he was seventh (47.64).

The 400 freestyle relay team of Jana Burner, Grace Nordquist, Kaillie Valentine and Sandra Alosno Rivas were second in 3:41.16.

Burner finished third in the 50 butterfly (26.24). She had a time of 26.54 in the prelims.

The Iowa Central women finished with 379 team points in the third spot. Indian Rivers (1,181) won the team title followed by South Georgia State (591).

Alonso Rivas was sixth in the 100 freestyle, followed by Valentine (58.15) in 15th. Ashley Wille (1:01.91) and Maria Havlik (1:06.97) were 19th and 23rd respectively.

Nordquist was seventh in the 1,650 (19:11.7) and Valentine was eighth in teh 50 butterfly (28.25), while Jordy Dubos (28.09) was 10th.

Lexi Quigley placed 11th in the (2:45.26) in the 200 breaststroke.

On the men’s side, Alfonso Flores was 11th in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.17) and Fort Dodge graduate Brennan DeCoursey (2:39.81) was 21st.

Ian Hilbrant was 15th in the 200 backstroke (2:09.12) for the Tritons.

Fort Dodge graduate Cayden Taylor (57.14) was 21st in the 100 freestyle.

Indian Rivers won the team title with 1,245 points. The Triton men finished fifth with 341 points.
