28 wrestlers advance in Humboldt

HUMBOLDT — Eighth-ranked Clarion-Goldfield/Dows claimed a Class 2A sectional title on Saturday and advanced 10 wrestlers through to districts next week.

The Cowboys finished with 256.5 points and Algona was second with 193, followed by Humboldt (169), Southeast Valley (166), South Central Calhoun (121.5) and Pocahontas Area (101).

Advancing as district champions for the Cowboys were Remington Hanson (113), Keaton Wilson (120), Reed Abbas (138), Tanner Abbas (145), Reymundo Vasquez (160) and Spencer Trenary (285).

Finishing second was Tyler Stein (106), Bryce Allen (126), Connor Johnson (132) and Mason Carpenter (170).

Hanson (32-4), Wilson (23-8), Reed Abbas (40-5) and Tanner Abbas (38-3) had two falls each on the day.

Vasquez (32-7) had a major decision and a 3-1 decision over Brody Goodman of South Central Calhoun in the finals.

Trenary (42-3) won by decision in the semifinals and pinned Algona’s Dominick Etherington in the finals.

Stein (31-13), Allen (22-23), Johnson (34-8) advanced by rule and Carpenter (35-10) advanced with a tech fall.

Algona advanced seven. Winning sectional titles were Carson Devine (170) and Noah Murphy (195).

Advancing as runner ups were Luke McKenna (120), Cole Johnson (138), Austin Chase (152), Calvin Kruse (182) and Etherington (285).

Devine (19-7) beat Carpenter in sudden victory of the finals and Murphy (27-15) earned a decision in the 195 pound final.

McKenna (28-20), Chase (38-15), Kruse (30-15) advanced by rule. Johnson (30-21) earned a fall and Etherington (35-3) won a tie-breaker over Justin Jones of Humboldt.

Brandon Johnson (30-12) won the 220 pound title for the Wildcats with a 6-4 decision over Southeast Valley’s Xavier Nichols.

Humboldt’s Joey Busse (39-3) fissiped second at 145 pounds. He bounced back with a true-second win.

Southeast Valley pushed four through.

Trey Lawrence (40-10) defeated Johnson 7-0 for the 132 pound title.

Kyler Fisher (49-0) had a fall in the finals over Algona’s Calvin Kruse in the 182-pound final.

Coledon Bethel (37-12) was second at 113 and Xavier Nichols (33-8) was second at 220 pounds. Bethel advanced by rule and Nichols earned a 1-0 decision in his true-second match.

Chase McAlister (45-3) had a tech fall and fall to win the 152-pound crown for South Central Calhoun.

Goodman (44-7) was second at 160 pounds for the Titans. He lost a 3-1 to Vasquez in the finals and advanced by rule.

Jacob Mielke (41-6) and Shea Ruffridge (45-1) won district titles and Philip Minkler (33-13) was second for Pocahontas Area.

Mielke (106) and Ruffridge (126) had two falls each on the day.

Minkler lost to Murphy of Algona in the 195 pound final and advanced by rule.

Webster City pushes 10 through

HUXLEY — The Webster City wrestling team won a Class 2A district title on Saturday and moved 10 through to the district meet.

The Lynx finished with 254 team points, ahead of Ballard (248). Seven Lynx claimed district championships, while three were runner ups.

Reece Sadler (106), Chase Rattenborg (113), third-ranked Drake Doolittle (120), eighth-ranked Carson Hartnett (132), eighth-ranked Zane Williams (170), sixth-ranked James Cherry (220) and top-ranked Cooper Lawson (285) earned district titles.

Ninth-ranked Luke Rohmiller (152), Hunter Collicott (182) and Caleb Olson (195) finished in second.

Sadler (19-22) had a fall and won the championship with an 11-8 decision over Nate Vanderwerff of Gilbert.

Rattenborg (33-9) had two falls on the day and pinned Jacob Vawter of West Marshall in 1:33.

Doolittle (37-3) had two falls in under two minutes. Doolittle pinned Cael Ihle of Gilbert in 1:52 in the finals.

Hartnett (33-5) had a fall in the semifinals and won by major decision over Jim Chism of Ballard, 17-4 in the finals.

Williams (35-6) had a 27-second fall and a 14-3 major decision over Gerald Gute of Ballard.

Cherry (29-4) had a fall in the semifinals and pinned Josh Detar of Ballard in 46 seconds of the final.

Lawson (39-0), the top-ranked wrestler at 285 had two falls, pinning Colin Anderson of Ballard in 1:33 of the championship.

Rohmiller (23-6) earned a major decision in the semifinals and lost by decision, advancing by rule.

Collicott (15-16) advanced by rule, after a fall in the semifinals.

Olson (15-9) had two falls on the day. He lost to Reldon Miller of Gilbert in the finals, but pinned Ballard’s Joseph Hofbauer in the true second match.

Seven Eagles to districts

LAKE MILLS — Eagle Grove had a strong day at the sectional tournament, placing second as a team and pushing seven wrestlers through to the district meet.

Derek Graham (113), Mark Dawson (132), Saxon Lyman (152) and Joel Mendoza (220) all won sectional titles.

Gabriel Rolon (120), Dawson Lalor (138) and Brayden Lyman (170) finished second and will wrestle next week.

Graham (34-5) won a sectional title without a match. With only two wrestlers at 113 pounds, Graham was in the final and won the title by forfeit.

Dawson (29-9) earned a tech fall and won the championship with a 5-0 decision over Casey Hanson of Lake Mills.

Saxon Lyman (41-7) had a fall in the semis and won the title with an 8-3 decision over Drake Love of Lake Mills.

Mendoza (31-5) earned a fall in the semifinals and a sudden victory over Max Johnson of Lake Mills in the finals.

Rolon (28-25) clinched a spot after a fall in the semis, a loss in the finals and advanced by rule.

Lalor (32-17) advanced after going 1-1.

Lyman (42-9) lost in the finals, but advanced by rule.

Cougars, E-Hawks advance 13

EMMETSBURG — Donavon Hanson, Daltin Roest, Koby Hanson and Enrique Maravilla all claimed Class 1A sectional titles here Saturday for Manson Northwest Webster.

The Cougars also advanced Austin Burger through to districts as a runner-up.

Donavon Hanson, Roest and Koby Hanson went a combined 6-0 with two falls, a technical fall and a major decision. Donavon Hanson (28-1) claimed the 106-pound title, Roest (35-7) won gold at 113 and Koby Hanson (18-4) was the winner at 132.

Maravilla improved to 34-1 on the season with falls in both of his matches at heavyweight.

Burger (31-18) moves on at 160 pounds.

Emmetsburg’s Christian Nichols, Levi Aldous, Bret Hoyman and Mason Griffin all claimed sectional titles for Emmetsburg.

Nichols scored a technical fall and major decision at 120, improving to 34-7. Aldous had a fall and a decision to claim the 126-pound bracket, and is 30-11.

Hoyman (33-13) had two decision wins, including a 3-2 victory in the finals at 145. Mason Griffin (35-7) was first at 152, earning a major decision and a 3-2 win in the finals.

Ethan Berven, Spencer Griffin, Nick Schany and Jimmie Steffens were all runners-up. Berven (31-12) advanced at 132 pounds, Spencer Griffin (33-6) at 138, Schany (28-15) at 182 and Steffens (31-11) at 220.

Garret Bruce, Nathan Thomsen and Austin Corbin all advanced for East Sac County as runners-up.

Thomsen finished second at 126, advancing with a record of 24-10. Bruce was second at 152 and moves on at 40-7, with Corbin heading to districts at 195 pounds with a record of 16-22.

Two move on for Greene County

WINTERSET — Greene County had a Class 2A sectional champion and runner-up here Saturday, advancing both to districts.

Clint Dennhardt picked up two falls to win the 182-pound bracket. Dennhardt is now 17-7 on the year.

At 170, Brock Wuebker (20-8) finished second to qualify.
