DES MOINES — Once Spencer Trenary threw Solon’s Tyler Linderbaum to the ground in the semifinals here on Friday, he knew he would get his chance at a state championship.

“I knew I was going to the finals the moment he hit the ground when I threw him,” Trenary said. “It was tight and I was confident.”

Trenary (50-4) has been mowing through the 285-pound field, and handed third-ranked Linderbaum (36-1) his first loss of the season.

He went back-and-forth through the first period and a half, but once Trenary cinched in the throw, he knew his dream had become a reality.

“Knowing I will be wrestling on Saturday (for a title) just filled me with a sense of pride,” Trenary said. “Looking back at my path to the finals, at a certain point, everyone you wrestle is going to be good. It doesn’t make sense to dwell on what you’ve done (in previous rounds), when there’s still more to do.

“With that in mind, being in the finals is a major milestone.”

Trenary beat Creston/O-M’s Blake Sevier in the quarters. Now the fifth-ranked senior will face No. 2 John McConkey (56-1) of Atlantic-CAM in the finals.

McConkey, a Northern Iowa recruit, handed Webster City’s top-ranked Cooper Lawson (45-2) his first loss of the season.

Trenary’s four losses this year have come to three ranked wrestlers. He lost to Lawson twice, fourth-rated Dominick Etherington of Algona, and No. 1 Caleb Sanders of Glenwood (3A).

“For me, making the finals is a sign of improvement and validation for a lot of the work I’ve put in,” Trenary said.

Trenary’s teammate, Tanner Abbas (45-4), dropped a tight decision to Ryan Steffen of Crestwood in the 145-pound semifinal. Abbas, who took a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals, still has a chance to finish third.
