Messerly steps down as Gael coach

The St. Edmond girls basketball program will be under the direction of a new leader this coming season after the resignation of Scott Messerly.

Messerly, who served in the role of head coach for the past 12 seasons, will be replaced on an interim basis by SEHS activities director Steve Neuberger.

“We thank Coach Messerly for his years of service to the girls basketball program,” Neuberger said in a statement. “The position will be opened up to applicants at the end of the season.”

After serving in an assistant role for several years, Messerly stepped in as head coach when Craig Carlson accepted the head women’s basketball job with Iowa Central.

“I’d like to thank the administration, the coaches I previously served under and everyone who supported me,” Messerly said. “I started coaching with Bill Rahm. Joe Shanks treated me great and was always fair with me as an athletic director.

“Dave Cooper, Jeff Clemens and Craig Carlson were all really good coaches to work under. Those are guys who taught me a lot about being a varsity head coach. You couldn’t find three better role models in coaching.”

Under Messerly, the Gaels won at least a share of three consecutive North Central Conference titles from 2012-15. They posted a record of 6-19 a season ago, including a postseason victory over Eagle Grove.

St. Edmond loses just two seniors from that roster in Megan Flattery and Page Kinney. Flattery was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Gaels, but return a handful of players who all saw time on the court last year including Erin Flattery, Hannah Huss, Jacque Oberg, Livi Huss, Brea McNeil, Macey Mason and Jocy Timmerman.

As for his own coaching future, Messerly plans to keep his license up to date for any possible openings.

“We’ll see what comes up and what is available,” he said. “When I took the varsity job years ago, it was a big step moving over one seat and was a scary thing to do.

“At that level, you have a lot of responsibility, but you have a lot of opportunity, too. I wouldn’t mind doing it again.”

Neuberger, who is in his first season directing the Gael athletic programs, previously served as head boys basketball coach at MMCRU previously.
