Ridge View tops Gaels with late surge

HOLSTEIN — Last week, the St. Edmond offense rolled up 34 points and almost 500 yards.

That wasn’t the case here Friday night, as the Gaels dropped their first district game of the season, 16-7 to Ridge View.

Following 36 minutes of scoreless action, St. Edmond (2-3 overall, 2-1 in Class A, District 2) and Raptors (4-1, 3-0) combined for all 23 points in the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t finish,” SEHS head coach Jon Borer said. “There were plays to be made and we didn’t make them. We didn’t finish this game and that’s something we have to get better at.”

Isaac Lursen had the lone score for the Gaels, taking a screen pass from Andrew Gibb and darting down the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown. The senior is already fifth on the single-season receptions list with 29 and eighth on the yardage chart with 486.

“We put together a solid first drive and after that, I’m not sure what happened (to our offense),” Borer said. “We had several kids miss practice this week because of sickness and I think that showed. When you don’t get in the reps, you make little mistakes.

“We were just a few inches off on several key plays. Our execution wasn’t there, and that’s frustrating.”

Ridge View, which features University of Iowa recruit Ezra Miller on the line, ran for 275 yards on 57 carries. Jake Mitchell had 136 of those yards and two scores, with Jake Kliegl adding 83 more.

Jaxon Franken, who was honored as Homecoming king during halftime, caught three key passes that all went for first downs from Jake Tokheim. Franken also picked off a pass late in the fourth that led to the final touchdown.

“That’s a big team that took advantage of their size in all areas,” Borer said. “But I thought our defense played great again. They made a couple mistakes, but that’s high school kids. They were trying to strip the ball and were doing what we teach.

“We’ll keep working and get better.”

St. Edmond converted just five first downs for the game, including only two in the second half. They rushed for just 56 yards on 22 carries and ran only 38 offensive plays on the night compared to 63 by Ridge View.

Gibb was 6 of 16 passing for 89 yards, finding Lursen, Elijah Litwiller, Charlie Shelly and Cade Naughton for completions. Shelly also had a fumble recovery to stop an early Raptor drive and Jackson Bemrich had a sack.

Miller, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound junior, is cousins with Fort Dodge Senior High quarterback Drake Miller. He went down with an injury in the fourth, but returned for the final drives on both offense and defense.

St. Edmond returns home after back-to-back road games, hosting Hartley-HMS (3-2, 2-1), a 42-18 winner over North Union. Next up for Ridge View is Sioux Central (3-2, 2-1).
