Flattery fires shutout for Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. — Former St. Edmond and Iowa Central standout David Flattery tossed a complete-game shutout for Kokomo here Thursday night.

Flattery, who will earn his degree form the University of Nebraska-Omaha this summer and attend Augustana University next year for his final collegiate season of baseball, struck out seven and allowed just three hits over nine innings of work.

The Jackrabbits scored a 4-0 victory over Chillicothe behind Flattery’s nine-inning, 115-pitch outing that came at Kokomo Municipal Stadium in front of over 1,300 fans. It marked just the third shutout in Kokomo history.

“(Thursday night) was great,” Flattery said after the outing. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a nine-inning outing before. I had all of my pitches working, was hitting my spots and the defense behind me was incredible.”

Kokomo provided Flattery with all the run support he would need in the second, plating four runs. The ex-Gael and Triton also had some key fans in attendance for the contest.

“My parents (Terry and Jean) made the trip too so it was pretty special,” he said. “It was a game I’ll never forget. This summer has been amazing.”

For his effort, Flattery was named the Coca-Cola Player of the Game. He had made four starts total for the Jackrabbits, going 2-2 with a 4.90 earned run average and 22 strikeouts with seven walks in over 25 innings of work.

The Jackrabbits complete their series with the Paints Friday night before taking on Champion City Saturday and Lafayette on Wednesday.

Kokomo is a college summer baseball team that was founded in 2014. They compete in the Prospect League and are coached by Gary McClure, who was born in Keosauqua and played at Southeastern from 1983-84.

“The Prospect League is one of the top summer leagues in the country and they spoil us players,” Flattery said. “The city of Kokomo is also great. Our stadium was voted the best in the nation in 2015 and ’16.”

Following the completion of the season, Flattery will return to Fort Dodge for a few weeks before school starts up again.

“It’ll be nice to get back home and spend some time with family and friends,” he said.
