RAINY GOODBYE

Mother Nature put a damper on Fort Dodge’s plans here Friday night at Rogers Park.

With a fast moving storm hammering down rain on the field, a doubleheader planned with Ames was called off after two-plus innings.

The Dodgers were leading the Little Cyclones in the opener, 2-0.

It was a tough decision to make for FDSH head coach Andi Adams, as the program planned to honor seniors Maggie Harvey, Mack Provin, Meagan Hartman and Aleah Sherman between games.

All four took to the field to start, including Harvey making her season debut at shortstop. The all-state catcher, who also played third base earlier this year, made the third out of the first inning on an infield popup.

“They all understand what it takes to be a Dodger, which is heart, grit and guts,” Adams said. “They have taken on different roles, been pushed out of their comfort zones and still stuck it out.”

Bre Tjebben doubled in Aubrey Davis in the first, while Provin followed with a second straight double off Ames pitcher Macee Buss.

Tjebben retired six of the eight batters she faced, allowing a double to Buss and a walk to Anna Stevens.

Harvey, a two-time first-team all-stater who will play at Minnesota State University, leads FDSH with 35 runs, 46 hits, five homers, 35 RBI and is tied for the team lead with 12 doubles. She is also second with 20 steals and has drawn eight walks and struck out only nine times in over 110 at-bats.

“Maggie might not be having the year she wanted, but she’s been willing to do whatever we’ve needed,” Adams said. “She came to me and asked to play shortstop because she knows it is what is best for the team. Not a lot of people would be willing to do that.

“She understands what it takes. Nobody understands our team like the coaches and the players; we know what is best.”

Hartman is hitting .337 with 13 RBI, two homers and has 25 strikeouts on the year. She has struck out just five times in 87 at-bats.

“Meagan is a captain and has taken on that same approach of doing whatever the team needs,” Adams said. “She’s pitched, played in the field and been a steady hitter for us. As a senior, you want them to sacrifice for the greater good and she has done that.”

Provin, who is headed to Buena Vista University to play softball in the fall, has a dozen doubles, 13 RBI and is batting over .330 on the year. She’s also made just two errors at first base in 231 chances.

“Mack has worked hard to secure a spot on the infield,” Adams said. “She’s always been a great bat for us, but she worked hard to improve her defense and has been a good role leader for the team.”

Sherman earned her first start of the season, taking over in right-field. She made a perfect catch on a ball hit to her in the second inning.

“Aleah is the type of player every team should have,” Adams said. “She could have quit a long time ago but she didn’t. She stuck it out and never quit. That’s why I decided any senior that sticks it out, they get a letter because that’s hard to do. “

The Dodgers (17-18 overall) close out their regular season on Monday when they travel to No. 3 (Class 5A) Johnston. The Dragons claimed a doubleheader earlier this year by scores of 6-2 and 10-3.

Fort Dodge opens 5A regional play next Friday at home vs. Sioux City East.
