Mohawks sweep Dodgers

MASON CITY — The Fort Dodge baseball team dropped a doubleheader to rival Mason City here Monday night.

Scores were 5-4 and 13-2 in six innings.

The Dodgers (9-19 overall) had a chance to tie it in the sixth after Drake Miller hit a home run, but the Mohawks (14-14) were able to turn a double-play and get out of the inning.

“We competed hard and had opportunities in the first game,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “It just never really happened for us to have that big inning.

“Credit Mason City for getting out of those situations, but our guys kept fighting.”

Fort Dodge is now 2-7 in one-run games this season.

Miller was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Bryer Nelson and Nate Scherff each drove in a run. Drew Callon had three strikeouts over four innings, and Scherff allowed just two hits over the final two.

In the nightcap, Scherff was 2-for-3 and Tyrnan Lara was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“Mason City is a good hitting club and they took advantage of us in the second game,” Utley said. “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”

Fort Dodge takes on Boone on the road Tuesday night.
