Webster City advances

WEBSTER CITY -Sixth-ranked Webster City and No. 5 Norwalk went toe-to-toe in the first half of their playoff matchup here Friday, but the Lynx pulled away to post a 33-14 win and advance to the Class 3A quarterfinal round.

The Lynx (9-1 overall) will now host district rival Boone (8-2) on Friday night.

Payton Kannuan scored on a 9-yard run, while catching a 22-yard pass from Drew Fielder and throwing a 29-yard scoring strike to Zane Carter.

Fielder also had a four-yard touchdown run.

Robert Frederiksen had a three-yard scoring jaunt.

Norwalk quarterback Brady Brandsfield was trying to become Iowa’s all-time passing leader last night, and was well on his way until an injury finished his efforts early in the second half.

Brandsfield entered the contest needing 347 yards to become the state’s career best statistically. He was 9-for-15 passing for 185 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

Webster City had 304 rushing yards in the victory. Fielder logged 18 carries for 120 yards, while Frederiksen had 31 totes for 115. Kannuan added 12 for 69.

Fielder and Kannuan combined to register Webster City’s first 100-yard passing game. Kannuan had 68 yards through the air, and Fielder had 36.

Zane Carter had two catches for 68 yards.

Boone advanced after scoring a touchdown late to cut its deficit against Creston to 21-20. They went for two and converted to earn the victory.
