Gael volleyball team starts regional quest

The St. Edmond volleyball team opens postseason play here on Monday, hosting Paton-Churdan in a Class 1A, Region 5 opener.

Action begins in the Gael gym at 7 p.m.

The winner advances to face Glidden-Ralston on Monday. The entire bottom side of the region will be played inside the SEHS gym, while the final is set for Clarion on Nov. 1.

St. Edmond (8-17 overall) enters the postseason having dropped its last seven matches. Prior to that, the Gaels had won three of four, including sweeps over Bishop Garrigan, Storm Lake St. Mary’s and Eagle Grove.

Junior Hannah Huss leads the Gaels in kills with 215 while also serving 86-percent with 57 aces. Megan Flattery, one of only two seniors on the roster, has 124 kills and 21 aces, while serving 189 of 202.

Livi Huss has recorded 420 assists and made 14 blocks, while Flattery has 23 blocks and Hannah Huss 21. Macey Mason has 221 digs.

Paton-Churdan (7-13) is 5-5 over its last 10 after starting the season 2-8. Sophomores Jenna Beyers (133) and Megan Carey (121) lead P-C in kills, while Carey has 43 total blocks.

In other Region 5 opening round play, West Bend-Mallard hosts West Hancock and Bishop Garrigan travels to North Iowa. Those two winners meet Monday, while the semifinal is scheduled for Oct. 27.
