Iowa Central sweeps titles
LINCOLN, Neb. – It was a clean sweep for the Iowa Central cross country teams here Saturday, as both the men and women won the college division of the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational.
Omer Almog finished second overall to unattached runner Joe Moore in the individual race, while Belesti Akalu, Karim Achengli and Ashenafi Hatte were sixth, seventh and eighth.
Almog had a time of 25:44, just 12 seconds behind Moore.
Former Fort Dodge Senior High standout Alex Jackson was 39th overall, while Mark Wahlen finished 50th.
Iowa Central had 34 team points, 21 better than Northwest Missouri. Air Force captured the university division over Nebraska, Kansas State, Wichita State and South Dakota.
Overall, the Tritons won the men’s team title, besting Air Force.
Leanne Pompeani was the individual race winner for the Tritons on the women’s side, completing the course in 21:31, which was 32 seconds ahead of Kansas State senior Morgan Wedekind.
Agnes Mansaray was fifth for the Tritons in 22:26, while Shanieke Watson finished 27th and Maddie Bach 28th.
Alliyah Regg Wajid placed 34th overall, Abby Gawthrop was 58th and Katy Pfile 82nd.
Iowa Central had 50 total team points, 11 ahead of Colorado College and 19 ahead of Nebraska-Wesleyan. South Dakota won the university division.
The women were fourth overall between the two divisions.
The Tritons are back in action next Saturday at the Cowboy Jamborre in Stillwater, Okla.
