Golden Bears, Lynx ranked

A pair of Messenger-area teams are ranked in their respective class in the initial prep football polls.

Bishop Garrigan, which opened the season with a win over Pocahontas Area, is third in Class A, while Webster City is tied for sixth in 3A.

The Golden Bears take on Southeast Valley this Friday night and the Lynx battle Clear Lake. The Jaguars received votes in the 2A poll, as did the Lions.

St. Edmond, which dropped its opener to Mason City Newman, received six votes in the A poll. The Gaels host Manson Northwest Webster this week.

Other area teams receiving votes include Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and South Central Calhoun in 2A. The Cowboys travel to Eagle Grove and the Titans host IKM-Manning.

West Des Moines Dowling, the defending 4A state champions three years running, are No. 1 just ahead of West Des Moines Valley. Cedar Rapids Xavier holds down the top spot in 3A, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in 2A, six-time defending state champion Iowa City Regina in 1A, Saint Ansgar in A and Don Bosco in 8-man.

The Regals lost to Cedar Rapids Xavier in Week 1, 35-26.
