Jaeschke will be at Carolina rookie camp
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – From Moorland to Fayette to Charlotte.
That’s the journey Cole Jaeschke hopes to take to become a quarterback in the NFL.
The Prairie Valley graduate received an invitational to attend rookie camp for the Carolina Panthers this week after not being picked in the 2015 NFL Draft. He’ll head out later this week in hopes of securing a free agent contract.
“I expect to compete and work really hard for the three-day camp,” Jaeschke said. “I leave on Thursday morning for Charlotte. I’m super excited for this opportunity that the Carolina Panthers have given me, and I’m going to make the most out of this opportunity.
“Hopefully on Saturday I will get offered a free agent contract.”
Since graduating from Upper Iowa University last fall, Jaeschke has made the most of every chance he’s had to shine in front of NFL brass. He attended a regional combine event in Texas, and was one of the select few that scored an invitation to the NFL’s Super Combine in Arizona.
All 32 NFL franchises, including the Panthers, had representatives at that combine.
“It was an amazing feeling getting a call from Carolina,” he said. “It was the opportunity I needed to sign a contract.
“I had a couple other teams calling my agent, but they were the only (franchise) that (formally)?offered anything.”
During his prep career, Jaeschke helped lead Prairie Valley – now a consolidated school with Southeast Webster-Grand called Southeast Valley – to the state football semifinals twice.
At Upper Iowa, he passed for 11,714 yards and 85 touchdowns and was invited to attend the Div. II Senior Bowl in South Carolina.
Currently, the Panther quarterback depth chart features Cam Newton, Derek Anderson and Joe Webb. Carolina is also bringing in Colorado State-Pueblo quarterback Chris Bonner to compete with Jaeschke.
Jaeschke will also be featured on the NFL Network television series “Undrafted” as part of his journey. The series typically airs in late-October.
