Mount Vernon explodes

Fifth-seeded PCM awoke a monster in fourth-seed Mount Vernon during Class 3A opener Monday at Rogers Park.

PCM (26-5 overall) scored two runs in the sixth inning to break a 0-0 tie, but Mount Vernon (31-7) broke out with a six-run answer. Mount Vernon earned the 6-2 victory and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Mount Vernon will face top-seed Williamsburg (38-5) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. back on Iowa Central Field.

Hayden Gookin (22-4) earned the victory, allowing three hits with four strikeouts.

Both Sophia Patten and Brynlee Bettcher had two hits. Patten drove in two runs, as did Kinley Nissen. Annabelle Smith and Sorell Telecky each drove in a run.

Libby Winters had a home run for PCM, driving in two runs with two hits, including a double.
