Addi Schmelzer blasted two home runs and Rachel Egleseder struck out 15 batters to carry Edgewood-Colesburg to a 6-3 victory over top-seed and No. 1 Exira-EHK/Audubon here Monday.
Schmelzer, a sophomore who had not hit a homer entering state, went deep in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie with a two-run shot on Farm Bureau Field in Class 1A action. She finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.
No. 15 Edgewood-Colesburg (28-10 overall) will take on fourth-ranked West Monona (26-6) at 12:45 p.m.
Meanwhile, Egleseder, who overcame Stage 2 Hodgkin Lymphoma and is headed to Kirkwood in the fall, dominated, striking out the side in the sixth after retaking the lead. She added to her 283 strikeouts coming into the day, with 12 of her strikeouts coming over the first 15 outs of the contest.
Egleseder was declared cancer-free in June after not missing a basketball game over the winter. She tied the 1A single-game state record with 15 strikeouts, sharing the mark now with Amber Logemann of Earlham, who hit that number in 2012.
Chloe Everett also had two RBI for the Vikings.
