During the regular season, fourth-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes posted a convincing 8-0 victory over No. 5 Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
This time on the big stage of the state softball tournament, the end result was the same.
The Mustangs advanced in their first appearance in Class 5A with a 3-1 victory over the Cougars. Dallas Center-Grimes (30-6 overall) will play top-ranked and defending state champion Waukee Northwest on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m.
Genevieve York had a pair of RBI, as the Mustangs scored three in the fifth to erase a 1-0 deficit. Addie Abens, who set a school record with 21 home runs, was kept in the yard but did drive in a run and score another.
Tessa Jones struck out two and allowed just three hits, as the lone Cedar Rapids Kennedy run was unearned. She is now 20-5 on the year with 194 strikeouts.
For the Cougars (33-9), Lily Knutson had two hits and Emerson Blocked scored the lone run. Knutson had five strikeouts but walked four inside the circle.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy faces Pleasant Valley on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
