The Davenport Assumption softball team is as battle-tested as anyone here playing at Rogers Park this week.

After falling behind early to Benton, the Knights rallied, advancing to another state finals with a 10-7 victory Wednesday evening.

Davenport Assumption (27-12 overall) will now face Williamsburg on Friday at 2:30 p.m. on Channel Seed Field. The Knights tied a state record by qualifying for a ninth consecutive season, making the semis each year while winning four titles.

While placing fourth in the Mississippi Athletic Conference, Assumption played the likes of fellow state qualifiers Western Dubuque, North Scott, Pleasant Valley, Muscatine and Solon.

“We have a lot of really good hitters who, once they have seen a pitcher three times through, they know what they can do,” Assumption head coach Tyler Edwards said. “I wasn’t ever really nervous about scoring runs. The girls were pretty nervous (for the quarterfinals) but they came out not showing any of those nerves (Wednesday).”

All that experience helped them in the fifth when they were able to take advantage with well-placed hits and baserunning and Benton miscues. The Knights scored seven runs on five hits with three Bobcat errors all leading to a drastic change in momentum.

Sophia Caudle, Charlotte Nigey and Kathryn Snyder each drove in two runs while Snyder and Bella Stoffregen each scored twice. Molly Roe struck out six and added an RBI.

“We were attacking, and if we are doing that, I’m fine with whatever happens,” Edwards said. “If you can take our best and beat us, credit to you.”

Benton (32-8) now faces Dubuque Wahlert for third at 1 p.m. Friday on Iowa Central Field. The Bobcats, fifth last year, were seeking their first state title since 2016.

Jessa DeMoss hit a home run, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Ana Glawe also had three hits and drove in a pair.
