Williamsburg rides momentum into semis

One hit turned into two. Two turned into three. Three into four and so on for third-ranked Williamsburg in its Class 3A state quarterfinal against West Liberty yesterday at the Rogers Sports Complex.

The Raiders opened the game 6 for 6 and rolled up 14 hits — two of them went for extra bases — in all in a 10-0, six-inning thumping of the eighth-ranked Comets.

Freshman lead-off hitter Shannon Finn went 3 for 4, as did Charlotte Wetjen in the No. 6 spot, and three other Raiders — Carly Campbell, Elle Ridgeway and Peyton Driscoll — had two hits each, as 2020 state runner-up Williamsburg (32-10) set a single-season school record for wins on its way to a semifinal date with WaMAC rival and second-ranked Mount Vernon today at 5 p.m.

“We just put it all together as a team,” Finn said. “I like to get it started for us, and when I can get going the rest of us can just keep rolling.”

Makenna Hughes and Campbell roped back-to-back doubles to right field to spark Williamsburg’s four-run first inning that put it in the driver’s seat for good. Campbell, Ridgeway and Driscoll drove in one run in the frame.

Ridgeway finished with three RBIs, while Campbell, Wetjen and Driscoll all had two. Seven of the nine batters in the Williamsburg lineup had at least one hit.

“Some people might think the top three are the best hitters, but that’s not the case for our team,” Driscoll said. “Everybody hits the ball.”

Williamsburg plated two runs in the second, one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and then ended the contest in the sixth on an RBI single to center by Wetjen. It was the Raiders second win of the season over West Liberty (23-9), the first an 11-3 decision in late May.

Driscoll, the Raiders’ sophomore right-handed pitcher, had her way with the Comets lineup. Working in a change-up to keep the hitters guessing, she allowed just two infield singles — a first-inning bunt by Pearson Hall and a third-inning base hit by Sailor Hall.

Driscoll retired 14 of 15 batters during one stretch and finished with four strikeouts.

“I think anyone coming to the state tournament, the confidence level goes up,” Driscoll said. “You have that motivation to win a state title and you just want to be here.”

Sailor Hall was on the hook for the loss. The West Liberty junior was responsible for all 10 earned runs; she walked four and struck out two.

West Liberty will face Estherville-Lincoln Central in a consolation round game today at 11 a.m.
