No. 1 Assumption easily advances

There was no stopping top-ranked Davenport Assumption here Monday night, as the Knights rolled past Clarke, 11-1 in six innings.

Next up for the state softball veterans will be either Anamosa or Atlantic in the semifinals on Wednesday at Rogers Park at 3 p.m.

Davenport Assumption (38-3 overall) got three in the first to gain control vs. Clarke as Anna Wohlers drove in Helen Sons and Libby Madden added a two-RBI single that plated Wohlers and Jessie Wardlow.

Sydney Roe connected on a two-run homer and Katie Anderson a two-RBI double in the third as Assumption broke the game open. Anderson drove in three with Roe and Madden plating two each.

The Knights are familiar with long weeks at state, advancing to the finals four of the last five years with titles in 2017, ’18 and ’19. They were upset in the semis last year by Williamsburg.

Bella Nigey pitched four innings, striking out five and allowing just two hits with a walk.

Clarke (17-12) had its four-game win streak snapped in the loss. The Indians won titles in 1995 and 2014, with current head coach Vanessa Bakley a player on that ’14 team.

Kiaya Dunbar drove in the lone Clarke run, scoring Bailey Buckingham.
