Walk-off inside the park HR pushes Clarksville into semis

One swing of the bat — and one fast runner — was all it took to push Clarksville into the Class 1A state semifinals on Tuesday night.

Cheyenne Behrends was off to the races on a lead-off line drive to right field, as her inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Indians a dramatic 7-6 victory over Akron-Westfield at Rogers Park.

It was the seventh home run of the year for Behrends, a junior shortstop. Third-seeded Clarksville (17-1 overall) fought back from an early 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Westerners (17-3) pulled even and forced extra innings with a single run in the seventh.

Janet Borchardt had three hits for the Indians, who are in Fort Dodge for the third time in the last four years. Behrends, Kori Wedeking, Ainsley Lovrien and Emma Poppe added two hits each, as Clarksville’s top five hitters in the lineup went 11-for-20 with seven runs scored and five RBI.

Wedeking was the winning pitcher, allowing just two earned runs. She struck out seven in improving to 15-1 on the season.

Jaden Harris recorded two hits for the Westerners, who have advanced to state 15 times in the last 18 years. Alayna Mullinix drove in a pair, and both Hailey Wilken and Autumn Bundy crossed home plate twice.

The Indians will meet Lisbon at 7:30 p.m. on Iowa Central Field Wednesday in a 1A semifinal.
