Lynx keep streak alive
You know the bats are hot when the seventh, eight and nine hitters in your lineup connect for home runs.
For North Linn, that was just another day — and win — at the park.
The Lynx posted their 31st consecutive victory here Wednesday, marching past Northeast and into the Class 2A state finals, 10-1. North Linn (25-0 overall) will face Ogden (21-3) on Friday at 5 p.m.
Natalie Gallery, Jenna Lemley and Skylar Benesh all went deep as Grace Flanagan hit two homers out of Veterans Field. For Benesh, an eighth-grader, and Gallery, a senior, it was their first longballs.
That was more than enough run support for Abby Flanagan, as the senior tossed a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and five walks. She also had two hits and drove in a run at the plate.
When asked about the homers from the bottom portion of the lineup, Flanagan said “That usually doesn’t happen.”
“It was really cool to see,” she added. “Especially since it was the first homers for two of them. We were just all hitting the ball really well and weren’t too nervous. We had some trouble there in the second, but we worked through it.”
The Flanagan sisters, who form the battery for the Lynx, were starters on the basketball team alongside senior Hannah Bridgewater that cut down the nets this past winter. Bridgewater had two stolen bases and scored a run.
Kaitlyn Sommerfelt and Gallery each finished with two hits, while Grace Flanagan had three. Gallery also scored two runs.
For the Rebels, who were making their first-ever appearance at state, Alexis Ehlers collected two hits and stole two bases. She also scored the lone run for Northeast, which had won 12 in a row entering the day.
