Stopping Davenport Assumption from making history is going to be mighty tough.

The second-ranked Knights took the first step towards a potential fourth consecutive state championship yesterday afternoon with a 15-0, 3-inning demolition of 15th-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in a Class 3A quarterfinal on Dodger Diamond inside the Rogers Sports Complex.

No team has ever won four straight summer softball crowns in Iowa.

Assumption (20-5) will attempt to earn a spot in the finals this afternoon when it faces third-ranked Williamsburg in the semifinal round at 3 p.m.

Assumption tagged BHRV pitcher Lizzy Blum for five first-inning runs, and then reeled off 10 more runs in the second to finish off the Nighthawks (14-3).

Maddie Loken, Anna Wholers and Gracie Jevyak all roped two hits for the Knights. Loken, a sophomore and the team’s lead-off hitter, delivered the knockout blow with a grand slam in the second inning. She drove in five runs, while Jevyak finished with four RBI.

Wohlers, a Depaul commit, smacked a double. Minnesota State recruit Carlie Sammon collected two RBIs.Assumption freshman pitcher Leah Maro limited BHRV to just three singles by Blum, Charli Bomgaars and Emma Zoet. Maro struck out three.

Assumption and Williamsburg met once during the regular season, a game that went all the Knights’ way in a 12-0 rout on June 20.

The rematch will happen without Assumption all-stater and Iowa State recruit Olivia Wardlow, who saw her season end due to a broken jaw earlier this month.
