Westwood and Colfax-Mingo matched the ever-rising temperatures Monday at Rogers Park, putting on an offensive clinic in a Class 1A state quarterfinal.

The Rebels were the ones left standing, advancing to a semifinal meeting with No. 1 and defending state champion Kee behind an 11-9 victory.

In the fifth, Katelyn Martian hit a sacrifice fly that plated Kalie Stanfield for the go-ahead run with two outs. Westwood (30-10 overall) added an insurance run in the seventh when Martian doubled in Kalie Toben.

Martian, a sophomore, finished 3-for-4 with five RBI including two doubles, while Kelsey Shilling, Andee Martin, Brooklyn Topf and Alyssa Mendenhall all drove in a run. Mendenhall, a senior, and Stanfield each had two hits.

“I knew my team was behind me making plays in the field,” said Martian, who earned the win inside the circle. “I didn’t do my best pitching, but the team was there behind me making plays all game long.”

The Rebels, who won the Western Valley Conference title this summer, have lost just once in their last 13 games to River Valley. This is their first appearance at state since placing fourth in 2007.

“I knew we wouldn’t keep them contained all game long,” Westwood head coach Dan Thompson said. “We just had to weather the storm.”

Colfax-Mingo (25-12), which rebounded from an early 8-3 deficit to tie it at 9-all, was led by Mackensie Brown’s three RBI. Ries Wilson, Amy Russell and Colbee Cunningham all had two hits, while Rhiannon Haley scored three runs.

Russell, Haley and Wilson all had home runs for Colfax-Mingo, who tied the 1A record for longballs in a single game with Don Bosco from 2013.

The Tigerhawks are back at state for the first time since they won it all in 2001.

Colfax-Mingo now faces Montezuma at 9 a.m. on Diamond 1 Tuesday in the consolation rounds.
