Clarksville rallies to top Belle Plaine, 9-8

Makayla Holub showed her experience Monday night in the state tournament at Rogers Park.

Holub, one of just two seniors on the Clarksville roster, drove in the game-winning runs in the bottom of the sixth, leading the Indians to a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Belle Plaine.

Clarksville (28-2 overall) now faces Sigourney in the semifinals on Thursday night for a spot in the state finals on Friday.

Holub, who also plated a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, picked her team up in the dugout after the Plainsmen (23-7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two.

“We got together and I just told everyone that this is still our game,” Holub said. “We were not going to lose and anything can happen. We’ve been in these situations before so we knew we could come back.”

Along with Holub collecting two hits, Bethany Negen, Bailey Myers and Emma Poppe each had two hits. Negen, Poppe and Janet Borchardt drove in a pair each.

“I think we were a little shaken in the first two innings,” Clarksville head coach Katie Wedeking said. “We were a little confused on when to use the practice field before the game and we started later. But once we got the nerves out, we hit the ball really well.”

The Indians answered the call in the bottom of the second, plating five runs on five hits. They added solo runs in the third and fourth.

Belle Plaine’s Amanda Cook cut the deficit to one with a home run in the seventh, but Kori Wedeking, a freshman, got out of it by sitting down the final two. Wedeking had seven strikeouts on the night.

Katy Ward drove in three runs for the Plainsmen, while Shaylee Stanerson had three hits.

The Plainsmen will face Akron-Westfield on Diamond 2 Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
