Corridor Plaza
New life: State grant helps fund plaza area; New strip mall to open in 2022
A new strip mall began taking shape in Corridor Plaza to create space for some retailers, while the former Crossroads Mall property also received a major state grant to create a recreation area to be called the plaza and pavilion.
New strip mall
A restaurant called Teriyaki Madness and a laundromat named Clean Laundry will open in the new strip mall being built at the southeast end of the former Crossroads Mall property. The businesses are expected to open in early summer.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming Clean Laundry and Teriyaki Madness to the Corridor Plaza,” said BJ Stokesbary, a spokesman for Crossroads Plaza Development LLC, of Ankney, which owns the site. “This is just the beginning for what this area will become,” he added.
Teriyaki Madness and Clean Laundry will join UnityPoint Health — Clinic Express and Discount Tire in the developing Corridor Plaza.
The restaurant and the laundromat will be in a strip mall taking shape on the South 29th Street side of the property between the old Younkers wing of the mall and the Advance Auto Parts store on Fifth Avenue South. There will be space in the strip mall for two or three more businesses.
State grant
In June 2021, the city of Fort Dodge was awarded a $17 million state grant to pay for creating a public plaza and a pavilion near the South 25th Street side of the property. That site has been described as a dynamic center of activity for entertainment, dining and shopping.
“It takes it from a project that is a great concept and great idea for Fort Dodge to something that will become reality,” Stokesbary said of the grant award. “Now that we know we have the funding we can really get down to the nitty-gritty details.”
Mayor Matt Bemrich said as the plan moves forward residents are “going to see some new fun spaces for them to use and enjoy.”
Advancing the project will also help the community recruit more retailers, according to Bemrich.
The proposed pavilion and plaza will be on the west side of the mall property behind Sparkle Car Wash, Central Financial Group and Great Western Bank.
The south end of the pavilion building would have a handful of spaces for restaurants, coffee shops or brew pubs. The north half of the building would have more open space and overhead doors.
The plaza will be an outdoor public space and entertainment area just north of the pavilion.
The concept for it includes pickleball courts, picnic shelters and a raised and partially covered stage. A fountain or other water feature would be nearby.
