Diabetes Awareness Month: Navigating the holidays with diabetes

By Julie Bass 2 min read

During November, it's important for us to raise awareness of a condition affecting millions of Americans -- diabetes.

Diabetes care has changed significantly over the years, and with today's medications, technology, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, education and treatment options, individuals have more tools than ever to manage their diabetes.

As millions of Americans living with diabetes know, a diagnosis does not mean you have to give up the things you enjoy or stop living a full and active life. As we approach the holiday season, many individuals will enjoy time with family, celebrate traditions and enjoy favorite foods and family recipes. For someone living with diabetes, holidays can bring additional challenges such as schedule changes, large meals, desserts, travel and busy days.

Managing diabetes doesn't mean you have to avoid every holiday treat or say no to the foods you love. Find balance by planning ahead, eating regular meals, considering portion size and choosing a variety of foods. Continue to take your prescribed medications and monitor blood glucose as recommended. Don't let one meal or day discourage you -- get back to your usual routine and continue working toward your health goals.

We are hosting our next Diabetes Support Group Lunch and Learn on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity Diabetes Center, located inside Trinity Regional Medical Center. We'll focus on "Navigating the Holidays with Diabetes" and will provide practical tips for managing diabetes during the holiday season, so you can relax and take care of yourself while still enjoying time with family and friends. You will learn, ask questions and share experiences while connecting with others.

As the holidays approach, remember you don't have to choose between enjoying the season and taking care of your diabetes. With a little planning, balance and support, you can do both. Reserve your spot at our upcoming support group by calling (515) 574-6350.
