Take charge this Diabetes Awareness Month

Every November, Diabetes Awareness Month shines a spotlight on one of the fastest growing health concerns in the United States – type 2 diabetes. According to the CDC, more than 38 million Americans have diabetes, and another 98 million (nearly 1 in 3 adults) have prediabetes, a condition that often progresses to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged.

Obesity, physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, family history and age all contribute to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. While a diagnosis can be overwhelming, there is hope and help.

At Trinity Diabetes Center, we’re dedicated to empowering individuals to take control of their health through education, compassionate support and expert care. A diagnosis isn’t the end of the road – it’s the beginning of a proactive journey toward better health.

Type 2 diabetes is when your body doesn’t use insulin properly, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Over time, this can cause serious health issues, but with the right management, a long and healthy life is possible. Thanks to significant advances in treatment and lifestyle tools, diabetes can now be effectively managed with a combination of personalized care, medication, nutrition, and physical activity.

10 Key Things to Know About Managing Type 2 Diabetes:

• Know the risk factors. Type 2 diabetes develops from a mix of factors – diet, lack of exercise, weight, family history and age. Understanding your personal risk is the first step to prevention.

• Ignoring diabetes doesn’t make it go away. Many people don’t feel symptoms early, but high blood sugar can silently damage your body. Early detection and proactive care are critical.

• Treatment has greatly improved. Modern treatments and tools means diabetes no longer has to lead to complications. With proper care, you can thrive with diabetes.

• Protect your heart. Diabetes doubles your risk for heart disease. Stay on top of your blood pressure, cholesterol, A1C levels and physical activity. If you smoke, seek help to quit.

• Know your numbers. Understanding your key health numbers – A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol – is vital. Work with your provider to set personal goals.

• Stick to a health maintenance schedule. Think of this as your diabetes “warranty plan.” Regular tests and check-ups are essential.

• A1C testing at least twice per year

• Annual dilated eye exams

• Kidney function screening

• Foot exams and skin checks

• Blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring

•l Dental visits twice a year

• You can still enjoy food. A diabetes-friendly diet doesn’t mean giving up everything you love. Portion control, balanced meals and smart food choices go a long way.

• Don’t skip your medications. Most people with diabetes will need medication. Skipping it puts your health at risk. Talk with your provider about your options, the side effects and what’s right for you.

• Focus on health, not just weight. Healthy changes in your activity level and food choices are more important than the number on the scale. Small, consistent improvements make a big difference.

• You’re not alone. Managing diabetes is easier with support. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or our expert care team, having someone in your corner helps. The Trinity Diabetes Center also offers free diabetes support groups for patients and caregivers. These sessions offer practical tools, shared experiences, and emotional support to help you handle the challenges of daily diabetes management. Starting in 2026, we’ll launch lunch and learn support groups with interactive sessions featuring a new topic each meeting designed to empower and inspire your diabetes journey.

With support, knowledge and action, diabetes can be managed, and your health can thrive. Let this Diabetes Awareness Month be the moment you take charge of your future. Call Trinity Diabetes Center at (515) 574-6350 to learn more about our services.
