Supports railroad merger

To the editor:

Fort Dodge has always had a relationship with the railroad. From the High Bridge to the tracks running through the heart of our city, the rail line is more than infrastructure. It is part of who we are. For the industries that drive our regional economy, from agriculture to manufacturing, reliable rail is not just nice to have; it is essential.

As CEO of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance, an organization dedicated to unifying and coordinating economic and community development to enhance the quality of life in the Fort Dodge region, my job is to position this community for long-term growth. This proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern presents an opportunity worth close examination of what it could mean for communities like ours that depend on efficient, reliable freight movement to compete.

The creation of the first truly transcontinental rail network would give Iowa direct, seamless access to markets from coast to coast. Fewer interchange points mean fewer delays. Less congestion in the system means more predictable shipping for our producers and manufacturers. That kind of reliability matters enormously when attracting new business investment or helping an existing company scale.

For the Fort Dodge region specifically, expanded market reach translates directly into economic opportunity. When our industries can move goods more efficiently, they grow. When they grow, they hire. And when we can point to world-class infrastructure, we have a stronger story to tell prospective employers.

The railroad helped build Fort Dodge. It continues to serve us today. This merger presents an opportunity to further our mission of enhancing the quality of life in Fort Dodge and the region, and the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance will continue to monitor its progress with that mission in mind.
