Disappointed by Hallmark closing

To the editor:

No Hallmark store in Fort Dodge? The word is spreading throughout the city and many supporters of the store are sharing their disappointment. It is sad to see this family-owned business priced out of having a location in the new mall complex.

Deb Schmidt and her staff always provide wonderful service and a pleasant shopping experience. The store is not merely a card store, but has a huge selection of gift items and home decor, and of course, Hallmark ornaments.

Deb and the owners worked with the developers for months and were anticipating their new “home” within the complex until recent knowledge of the costs and conditions in the lease crushed their plans. They would have a smaller area at twice their current rent and would also have the added expense of finishing their interior walls and flooring, and an optional bathroom. Fort Dodge supports small businessses. How can this valued business, and the other mall occupants, continue to thrive in our town.
