It is raining!

To the editor:

We often hear that the state’s financial reserves are set aside for a “rainy day” and I am writing this letter to say It Is Raining! The mental health needs of our children in Iowa are intense and growing and the time has come to mobilize our efforts to support an estimated 1 in 5 children (Youth Mental Health First Aid) who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, or other diagnosable illnesses. We need to advocate with our policy makers to take some of the $127 million that Governor Reynolds touted as “flush reserves” in January’s State of the State address and invest in our children so they can become adults who can thrive and add value to our state. So, please contact your local Senators and Representatives or write the Governor’s office to voice your support for a Childrens’ Mental Health System that can provide timely, regional, and effective services.

We also must continue to eliminate the stigma related to talking about mental health, for children and adults alike. We must help children and adults, who may be struggling, know that it is okay for them to talk about their needs and to also know that they are not alone. As you think about the people in your life who may be struggling, ask them how they’re doing, listen to their struggles and be there for them. Let them know that you’re there and that you will help them get to appropriate professional care when they are ready. I was talking to someone the other day and they said many years ago Americans didn’t talk about cancer either…it was off limits and that there was a stigma related to talking about this terrible, non-discriminating disease. So, maybe mental health in 2019 is like cancer used to be…let’s talk about mental health as much as we do cancer these days because the support, care and love we show for others when we talk about it, helps everyone in many ways.

In conclusion, a small group of people in the Fort Dodge area are trying to bring a National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) affiliate here to provide education, training and support for individuals, peers, and families.
